Respecting reading as a mode of literacy while attuning to all other modes of literacy, such as writing and communicating, is what it means to teach reading for liberty. It entails making reading a priority throughout the school day. It involves understanding the importance of reading in all content areas: kids must get direct, explicit reading instruction suited to each content area if they are to learn science, social studies, mathematics, and English content profoundly and meaningfully.
We must expect children to meet and conquer grade-level complex content that is rich, engaging, and deserving of their time and attention when teaching reading for liberty.
